If only ‘ol Ponce de León did find that magic fountain. That elusive Fountain of Youth. But alas, being forever young and having an elongated life is not to be! Or is it so? Even if we can’t find those magic waters, can we still have beautiful glowing youthful skin?
Yes we can!
This is the most important of all beauty tips for younger looking skin. Water makes up to around 65% of your body, and depriving yourself of it is a big no no to fabulous skin.
We unconsciously perspire all day causing the body loses water vital for the function of our organs. Because of this an adult should drink at least two litres of water per day. Dehydration diverts the water available to essential organs such as the heart and liver so the skin is not given biological importance. Boosting your intake of water ensures that water, needed for skin cell formation, is diverted to the skin.
A well-balanced diet can help your skin look healthy by delaying its aging process and strengthening the elasticity on your face. You should focus on a diet low in fats and processed carbohydrates and rich in vitamin C. Also eat foods rich in vitamin A like yellow and orange fruits or take moringa. It’s not necessary to cut anything out of your diet, but just make sure it is balanced and you are not consuming too much of anything.
Exposing yourself to the Ultraviolet radiation from the sun’s rays causes the collagen and elastin fibers that keep your skin firm to break down. This accelerates wrinkles and aging.
Try to avoid being in the sun during high intensity hours which are usually between 10am and 4pm. If this is unavoidable, wear a hat and a long sleeve shirt and don’t forget the sunscreen.
Having uncontrolled stress makes your skin prone to several problems. Every time you use your facial muscles, grooves form in your derma (cells underneath your face). When your skin loses elasticity, it becomes unable to fill these grooves. Go for easy walks and do some light exercise to help relieve the tension that causes stress.
And get plenty of rest. Not enough quality sleep will make your skin look tired and older and cause bags under your eyes. Deep sleep is the skin’s quickest cure for dull and sullen skin.
Exercise helps with skin renewal because it promotes blood flow and nutrients to the skin’s surface. When your blood is being pumped around the body, live skin cells lying deep in the skin are pushed up higher to the surface of the skin. This helps to create a fresher, younger appearance because they sit higher up on the skin’s surface.
Research shows that smoking ages skin. It impairs the production of collagen. Collagen, a protein that helps skin strength, gradually degrades with age, leading to wrinkles. Smoking causes this to happen sooner and also causes the tiny blood vessels in the skin to tighten, which reduces the amount of oxygen and nutrients that the skin cells receive, which also reduces elasticity and accelerates ageing.
The Mayo Clinic also suggest that exposure to heat from burning cigarettes damages facial skin and that certain smoking behaviours contribute to wrinkles, because of the repetitive facial expressions that smokers make, such as pursing the lips on inhaling and squinting their eyes to keep the smoke out.
So consider quitting. With the environment already so polluted and creating havoc on your skin, you don’t want self-inflicted skin issues.
Gently wash your face with warm water to remove dirt and bacteria. Be careful to not use water that is too hot and use a mild cleanser with a PH of 5. Apply a moisturizer to help keep your skin looking hydrated and to boost collagen and elastin production.
New skin cells are created in the skin’s inner layer (dermis). As they form form, the old, dead skin cells are pushed to the outer layer of the skin (epidermis). These dead cells gradually flake off. But some of them hang on for too long, making your complexion look dull and rough and clogs your pores causing acne and other blemishes. Exfoliating the skin removes these dead cells. You can do this at home by using honey and oatmeal.

Joy Spring
The joy spring, the fountain of pleasure
Is deep inside you whether you’re diggin’ it or not
Once you’re aware of this spring
You’ll know that it’s the greatest
Treasure you’ve got
And furthermore
The joy spring, the bounteous treasure
Cannot be bartered away and never
Can be sold
Nothing can take it from you
It’s yours and yours alone to have
And to hold
So this fountain of pleasure
That’s deep inside you, let me inform you in all truth –
Ponce de Leon sought this
When he was searchin’ for the fountain of youth
